bhutan trek and tour

Southern Bhutan

The seven districts of Bhutan, namely, Samtse, Chukha, Dagana, Tsirang, Sarpang, Zhemgang and Pemagatshel forms the southern part of Bhutan. It is also known as the ecological hub of the country.

Zhemgang district is ideal for nature oriented tours along with its cultural highlights which are equally appealing. Inhabitants of Zhemgang are ethnically called the Khengpas. Zhemgang people here are grouped under three regions of upper, middle and lower Kheng. This region was closed to tourism in the past years. Only recently, a small part was opened for bird watching. This newly opened region is the jewel of tourism in Bhutan. If you are interested in the last of the animist traditions in Bhutan, this is the region. Zhemgang people invariably celebrate a number of shamanistic practices, locally known as Bon. Khengpas are skillful artisans and are famous for their bamboo products like wine containers, baskets, matted bamboo carpets and other cane products. The famous Dunmang hot spring is also in this district.

There are other hot springs in Sarpang district. The residents of Sarpang are a combination of almost every ethnic group in Bhutan - Sharchopas, Ngalops, Bumthaps, Khengpas, Kurtoeps and Lhotshampas. However, majority of the inhabitants are the Lhotshampas, they are nature worshippers and this contributes to great diversity of cultural experiences. The vastness of agricultural land has persuaded many farmers to inhabit in Sarpang. This is one of the newly opened destinations when Gelephug was made feasible for entry and exit of tourists. Presently, Gelephug is the only destination opened for cultural highlights.

  • We appreciated this local Travel Agency, because of friendly and experienced Staffs, who are working in it. They always tried to do their best, to make everything perfect, on what you agreed before beginning of the trip. This is important for clients, who decide to travel in Asia, because experienced tourists know, that it's not always like this here. I hope, they will remain the same, when their company will grow up.
